A travalogue on Mysore through South Kerala

South Kerala is a linguistic-cultural region of India that covers the seven Districts Trichur, Palghat, Calicut, Kannur, Waynad,Malappuram and Kasargod. South Kerala region begins with Trichur and ends with Kasargod. At Kerala's peninsular tip, there is the mesmerizing south where the Muslim influence is at its top.   Hinduism  in  South  was  least  altered  by  the  external influence and it’s at its most exuberant.
The Temple towns of south Kerala are quite unlike those of the North and superbly Vibrant.

I have started my journey on 27th morning with my family from Kottayam at 7am. We reached angamaly at 9am, took breakfast and reached Trichur at 10.30 am. Trichur with its rich history, cultural heritage and archeological wealth is the cultural capital of Kerala. Trichur is famed for and wide for its pooram festival. This festival district has witnessed many rulers and dynasties starting with  the Zamorins, Tipu  Sultan  to the Dutch and the British. A cultural center, the Kerala Kalamandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy are located here.

First we went to the Zoo and museum which is literarily meant for museum. We took a Family ticket for Rs.22 and a Camera pass for Rs.5. There we saw empty old cages and rooms with Crows and Doves. The Lion at Zoo is nearing its last and totally nothing to see. We didn’t took any photographs and left for museum. It is comparatively better but as Cultural capital, Trichur Museum needs more.

Trichur has a beautiful round(road) where Vadakkumnathan temple and Thekkinkadu maidanam is situating. The great pooram of Trichur is facilitating here.

Trichur  rose  in  importance  due,  it  is  believed,  to  Raja  Rama Varma, popularly known  as `Sakthan Thampuran'  who  ascended  the  throne  of  Kochi in 1790. Large areas of Trichur were captured by the Zamorins of Kozhikode in the 14th and 15th centuries. Later, in the latter half of the  18th centuries, Tipu Sultan held sway over Trichur until the European domination began under the Portugese,  the Dutch, and the English. There is another museum in the Saktan Tampuran Palace. It is worth to see the palace and its medicinal garden near to it.

We left trichur at 1.05 pm for Calicut through Vadakkumcherry, kolappully, pattambi, perunthalmanna, malappuram. We saw the great Kerala Kalamandalam while passing through Cheruthuruthy.

We reached Kozhikode at 5.30pm. Calicut is the anglicised form of Kalikut. The Arabic for the Malayalam , Kozhikode. It is also called the Cock Fort. According to the historian, K.V Krishnan Iyer, the term means koyil (Palace) Kodu (Fortified). Anyhow, it is a historical town with a hoary past. From time immemorial, the city attracted travellers, with its charming physical features and prosperity. Even today , the glory that was Calicut has not faded. The political history of Kozhikode is a story of treacherous and ill conceived conspiracies hatched by the Western powers. Vasco De Gama landed at Kappad in May 1498, as the leaders of a trade mission from Portugal and was received by the Zamorin himself.
At first took a room at Hotel Maharani, after got fresh we drove to beach.
